Primary Reasons for Diabetes in Senior Citizens
One of the main reasons for diabetes in seniors is the deposition of fat on the abdomen. This happens as a result of malnutrition (sometimes – due to adherence to diets for other diseases, such as celiac disease), diseases of the adrenal glands, thyroid gland. Usually, diabetes may also develop against the background of genetic predisposition.
Excess fat on the abdomen is not just a cosmetic defect, but an “unplanned” endocrine organ, due to which cells of different tissues cannot adequately understand the insulin levels. The pancreas in order to correct the situation ends up producing even more insulin. And if this situation continues for a long time, then the gland is depleted and ceases to synthesize this hormone in general. In this case, the introduction of insulin becomes necessary for the patient.
We are now talking about type 2 disease, which is more common in older people. Of course, diabetes in older people can be of type 1 as well. This disease is caused by the elimination of those pancreatic cells that produce insulin, their own antibodies.
Over the age of 60, diabetes can develop even in people with normal weight. Scientists say that this is due to the age-related decline in the sensitivity of tissues to insulin, and also because of a decrease in the production of this hormone by the pancreas.
Besides, the risk of diabetes in an elderly person increases if they:
Eat high-calorie foods that contain a lot of fat and simple carbohydrates, but few proteins and complex carbohydrates. Such food is quickly absorbed in the body and in a very short time, the person again has a feeling of hunger;
Are forced to take diuretic medications of the thiazide series, drugs for ischemic heart disease and hypertension from the group of beta-blockers (Nebilet, Corvitol, Metoprolol), glucocorticosteroids, hormones, and drugs for the treatment of mental disorders. The listed drugs affect carbohydrate and fat metabolism;
Lead a hypodynamic lifestyle;
Have a deficiency of the glucosidase gene to an extent where the pancreas stops simple carbohydrates from entering the gastrointestinal tract and, in response to them, produce insulin.
